The Fashion Institute of Technologys museum has provided many must-see exhibitions over the years, ranging from Gothic charm to body-contorting corsets. Next up on your radar: Black Fashion Designers, opening on December 6th, explores the creative and cultural impact of African American designers in the fashion industry. Spanning six decades – from the 1950s to the present – the program is divided into eight themes, such as “Breaking into the Industry,” which includes the works of New York designers Arthur McGee and Wesley Tann, who faced discrimination in the 1950s and highlighted the “African influence” of the 1960s, as well as modern designers such as Aisha Ayensu, who transforms traditional Ghanaian wax prints into clothing. The “Rise of Black Fashion Designers” section pays tribute to the disco era of the 1970s, highlighting Stephen Burrows gold evening gown and Scott Barries body-conscious silk wrap dress. “Experimentation” showcases the fashion of Andre Walker, deconstructed cape jackets, and Shayne Olivers gender-fluid long-sleeved shirt dresses for Hood by Air. Models also take center stage. There is a flashback Ebony Fashion Fair exhibit that began in 1958, creating opportunities for black models during the era of segregation, as well as an original short film on the theme of diversity. The Washington Posts fashion critic Robin Givhan is joined by fashion giants Bethann Hardison, Veronica Webb, and Riley Montana. To mount the exhibition, FITs assistant curator of costumes and textiles, Ariele Elia, and curatorial assistant Elizabeth Way spent two years researching the subject in depth. “We really wanted to revise fashion history, including those overlooked designers,” Elia said, the inspiration behind the program. Of the approximately 75 garments on display, Elia and Way are particularly excited to showcase the work of Ann Lowe – known for designing Jacqueline Kennedys wedding dress. “She had her own dress shop, catering to society clients,” Way said. “She was a truly influential designer, but for many people, shes completely unknown.”
