As Lily Collins walked the red carpet at the Golden Globes 2017, we werent sure what we were obsessed with first. She worked it tonight from head to toe in a Zuhair Murad dress with pearl pink, a braided knot, and crimson lipstick. Together, the combo screams Disney princess – in the best possible way. We spoke with her hairstylist Gregory Russell to find out how he created Collins textured updo. Because of all the pearls on her dress, Russell wanted to keep her hair modern and loose instead of polished. “I didnt want it to become something that was too finished and promising,” he tells curls. “I wanted it to be a statement, but I wanted it to look really romantic. I feel like a really soft, messy texture supports that mood.” To create a lot of texture, he started with clean hair and two golf ball-sized dollops of John Frieda Luxurious Volume Perfectly Full Mousse. When we saw the end result, we convinced the actress, who is nominated for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Comedy or Musical for her role in Rules Dont Apply, to come to him with second-day hair. After Russell raked the mousse through her roots and ends, he dried Collins hair with a brush with multiple bristles instead of a round brush. This helped create a more natural texture than a super smooth, straight out of the Dry Bar style mood. Then he set the Mohawk area with Velcro rollers. And heres the part thats really important: he waited until Collins hair was completely cool before removing it. This helped the braided bun maintain all its body and shape. Once Collins hair was dry and cool, Russell sprayed shampoo everywhere. Because her hair was clean, the product created more messy texture instead of absorbing oil. Then he pulled her hair into a ponytail. To create the gravity-defying shape of the bun, he tilted Collins upside down. He developed a standard braid and a fishtail braid and pulled them apart to add even more texture. Then he says he crossed them over the top of the bun to add a more modern detail, “like the dress.” And they really brought it all together.
